Veterans Day Ceremonies in Arlington

Several Veterans Day events are taking place in Arlington County over the weekend. Veterans Day takes place on Sunday.

Arlington National Cemetery

President Barack Obama will appear at Arlington National Cemetery’s wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns at 11 a.m., according to a press release from the cemetery. The ceremony will followed by an observance program hosted by the Department of Veterans Affairs in Arlington's Memorial Amphitheater.

According to a release from the cemetery, the wreath-laying ceremony and the observance program are free and open to the general public. No tickets are needed to attend these events, but space is limited to standing room only for the wreath-laying ceremony and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis in the amphitheater. Attendees are encouraged to be at the Tomb of the Unknowns or seated in the amphitheater by 9:30 a.m. for the 11 a.m. program.

Air Force Memorial

The Air Force Association and Air Force Sergeants Association are hosting an 11 a.m. ceremony at the Air Force Memorial located at One Air Force Memorial Drive off of Columbia Pike.

The service is open to the public. Participants will observe a two-minute moment of silence for those in the U.S. armed forces who were killed while in service. A wreath will be placed at the Memorial in memory of veterans of the United States Air Force and its heritage organizations.

Clarendon War Memorial

Local veterans will gather at the Clarendon war memorial at the park in the triangle of the Clarendon Metro Station.

The Arlington-based John Lyon VFW Post 3150 is putting on the service which takes place at 1 p.m. The post will also be laying a wreath in honor of of Lance Corporal Niall Coti-Sears. According to a Facebook post from the group, Sears was the first Arlingtonian who died in combat this year in Afghanistan.
