Restaurant Inspection Reports for Clarendon and Greater Arlington

The latest round of restaurant inspection reports in the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor and beyond.

Below are highlights from the most recent Virginia Department of Health’s restaurant inspection reports. The full reports can be accessed on the health department's website:

Clarendon area:

Summers Restaurant
1520 N. Courthouse Road
Date of inspection: Aug. 15
The food establishment serves or sells raw or undercooked food and the permit holder does not inform consumers of the significantly increased risk consuming such foods by way of a disclosure and reminder using brochures, deli case or menu advisories, label statements, table tents, placards, or other effective written means.

Date of inspection: Aug. 15
The enclosure for refuse, recyclables, or returnables is not clean. Leaves and trash accumulating on the ground inside the enclosure.

1501 Wilson Blvd.
Date of inspection: Aug. 15
The handwashing sinks located behind the counter and in the kitchen were observed blocked by trash cans.

Guarapo Restaurant

Date of inspection: Aug. 15
Raw animal foods are not separated from each other during storage, preparation, holding, and/or display.

Sushi Rock

Date of inspection: Aug. 17
No soap at bar hand sink. No paper towels at bar hand sink.

Clarendon Café
3100 Clarendon Blvd.
Date of inspection: Aug. 17
Hot dogs at 49 degrees and chicken salad at 52 degrees observed in the 3-door prep refrigerator.

Faccia Luna Trattoria
2909 Wilson Blvd.
Date of inspection: Aug. 21
The following were improperly cold holding: mushrooms, 61 degrees and sausage, 60 degrees in the drawer refrigerator and tomato, 50 degrees and sausage, 50 degrees in Victory upright.

Cafe Asia
1550 Wilson Blvd.
Date of inspection: Aug. 21
The follow items were observed cold holding at the indicated improper temperatures above shrimp at 59 degrees, tofu at 49 degrees.

Greater Arlington County:

Urban Thai
561 S. 23rd St.
Date of inspection: Aug. 15
Bean sprouts were stored at 68 degrees, half cooked chicken at 70 degrees (discarded). Health codes state that potentially hazardous foods should be maintained at 41 degrees or less.

Philipine Oriental Market & Deli
3610 Lee Highway
Date of inspection: Aug. 15
Lots of food in several cooling units prepared and held in the food establishment for more than 24 hours is not clearly marked to indicate the date or day by which the food shall be consumed on the premises, sold, or discarded.

La Bettola
558 S. 23rd St.
Date of inspection: Aug. 15
Live American roach observed in the kitchen. Mouse droppings observed in the boiler room and underneath the stairs.

Java Shack
2507 N. Franklin Road
Date of inspection: Aug. 15
Refuse, recyclables, and returnables are not properly removed from the premises. Some bucket lids holding water from rain which may provide breeding grounds to mosquitoes.

Cantina Mexicana
515 S. 23rd St.
Date of inspection: Aug. 15
Rodent droppings observed in the front storage hallway. The walk in refrigerator is scheduled to be seen by the repair man. One of the refrigerators in the hallway is not maintained in a state of repair and condition that allows them to hold food at the appropriate temperature.

No soap observed at bar hand sink.

Peter's Deli
2611 Jefferson Davis Highway Suite 4
Date of inspection: Aug. 16
The handwashing station is being used to clean equipment and utensils (soda nozzles).

Peking Pavilion Restaurant
2912 N. Sycamore St.
Date of inspection: Aug. 16
Working containers used for storing poisonous or toxic materials are not clearly and/or individually identified with the common name of the material (bottle of degreaser was not labeled).

Oriental Super Market

Date of inspection: Aug. 16
Interior of the ice machine was observed moldy.

Joe's Place Pizza & Pasta

Date of inspection: Aug. 16
Stored pasta and sliced deli-meat prepared more than 24 hours previously was observed stored in the establishment without any date-mark.

Hyatt Regency Crystal City Cinnabar Restaurant
2799 Jefferson Davis Highway (2nd floor)
Date of inspection: Aug. 16
Raw animal foods are not separated from each other during storage, preparation, holding, and/or display. Raw beef stored over raw shrimps and mussels in the walk-in refrigerator.

Columbia Pike Citgo
2324 Columbia Pike
Date of inspection: Aug. 16
The food establishment is not under the immediate control of a Northern Virginia certified food manager.

Brick's Pizza
4809 N. First St.
Date of inspection: Aug. 16
The kitchen handwashing sink is not provided with individual, disposable towels; a continuous towel system that supplies the user with a clean towel; or a heated-air hand drying device.

Auntie Anne's Soft Pretzels
1755 Jefferson Davis Highway
Date of inspection: Aug. 16
A food employee did not clean their hands and/or exposed portions of their arms before donning the gloves and engaging in food preparation and/or working with clean equipment or after other activities that contaminate the hands.

A sink with at least 3 compartments is not provided for manually washing, rinsing, and sanitizing equipment and utensils.

Pico de gallo at the salsa bar cold holding at the improper temperature of 47 degrees. Pork for carnitas in the walk-in refrigerator cold holding at the improper temperature of 49 degrees.

Food containers prepared and held in the food establishment for more than 24 hours is not clearly marked to indicate the date or day by which the food shall be consumed on the premises, sold, or discarded.

Date of inspection: Aug. 20
Cheese and tomatoes were cold holding at improper temperatures in the three door prep. Beef, ham, and meatballs were improperly cold holding in walk-in.

Ready-to-eat food is not protected from cross contamination by separating them from raw animal foods. Raw chicken and eggs stored over cooked and ready-to-eat foods in the "Dasani" 1 glass door refrigerator (rear kitchen).

No handwashing observed throughout inspection. Cooked vegetables, Spinach & Beef Safiha, and Chicken w/almonds, etc. prepared and held in the food establishment for more than 24 hours is not clearly marked to indicate the date or day by which the food shall be consumed on the premises, sold, or discarded.

Date of inspection: Aug. 20
Surfaces of the interior of the soda nozzles were not observed to be clean.

Charlie Chiang's Restaurant
4060 Campbell Ave.
Date of inspection: Aug. 20
A can of whipped cream with an expiration date of July 15, 2012 was found at the bar. Same pair of tongs used to grab seafood, cut red meat, and chicken for cooking in the top portion of the left cook-line prep refrigerator.

The handwashing station at the kitchen is being used as a dump station.

Market Basket
1669 Crystal Square Arcade
Date of inspection: Aug. 21
Sliced cheese packaged in establishment for sale was not labeled with name and date. Some packages were moldy.

Dama Bread
1499 Columbia Pike
Date of inspection: Aug. 21
Employees are not properly sanitizing cleaned multiuse equipment and utensils before they are reused. Employees observed rinsing and sanitizing but not washing equipment.
