Memorial Day Events In and Around Arlington

With tons of local events, Arlingtonians have plenty of options to make their Memorial Day a busy and enjoyable one.

Before you let loose with some beer and barbecue on this coming Memorial Day, why not stop for a moment and devote a few hours of the holiday to sincere and somber rememberance for the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice? Arlington, as well as the District, offers plenty of ceremonies where one can reflect on the great honor and heroics of military service.

Memorial Day Observance at The Wall, 1 p.m. Monday, Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Hosted by the Memorial Fund and the National Park Service, this free ceremony is a chance to honor America’s armed forces Armed Forces, and pay tribute to the great men and women who lost their lives during the Vietnam War.

Full Honor Wreath Ceremony, 11 a.m Monday, Arlington National Cemetary

Another chance to honor lives lost while in the service of our great country, this event can be especially crowded, so arrive early if you would like a good vantage point for the actual wreath laying.

Fleet Reserve Association Wreath Laying, 10 a.m. Monday, the Navy Memorial

Much like the other wreath laying ceremonies, but specifically in honor of casualties of the Navy. The service includes a performance by the U.S. Navy Band (1 p.m.)

Honoring Our Fallen Warriors, 9 a.m. Monday, the World War II Memorial

An early morning wreath-laying ceremony in honor of our veterans, fallen and living. This is one of the most comprehensive and meaningful ceremonies, including short remarks by several guest speakers.

Here are a few more Memorial Day events with a little more noise.

Motor Cycle Rally

Rolling Thunder will begin lining up their deafening mass of motocycles at the Pentagon Parking Lot throughout the morning. The giant motorcade will depart at roughly noon to ride into and around the Disctrict.

The Memorial Challenge

A much quieter type of bike will be used in honor of venteran, as the Memorial Challenge cylcing race kicks off  at 12 p.m. at Ft. Meyer. The race lasts several days, ultimately ending the following weekend in Virginia Beach.

30th Annual Memorial Day Parade and Festival

Head on over to Falls Church for a full day of fun and festivities; the event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m at City Hall (300 Park Avenue) and include amusement rides, pony rides, arts and crafts booths, food vendors, , live entertainment, and more.
