Day, Night Delays Begin on Washington Boulevard at Columbia Pike

VDOT: Project will take three years to complete.

On Tuesday, road crews will stop nighttime traffic on Washington Boulevard up to 30 minutes at a time as part of the construction of a new bridge over Columbia Pike, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

VDOT recommends drivers find an alternate route that night.

Some daytime lane closures already have already been in effect as the $51.5 million, three-year project gets fully under way.

This week's night work is scheduled for 9 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Single lanes initially will be closed between Interstate 395 and the entrance to Fort Myer, according to VDOT. At midnight, crews will begin stopping traffic for up to 30 minutes at a time to remove an overhead sign.

Columbia Pike will be closed up to five weekends per year. Traffic will be rerouted in those instances.

According to VDOT, the new bridge features:

  • A higher clearance to accommodate a future streetcar;
  • 11-foot lanes on Columbia Pike, plus a left-turn lane and raised median;
  • A shared-use path on one side of Columbia Pike and a sidewalk on the other;
  • And reconfigured ramps to improve access, traffic flow and increase capacity.

The state worked with Arlington County and area residents on the design of the bridge, which will reflect the historical significance of — and be named for — Freedman's Village, according to VDOT.
