Visions for Vacancies: Empty Lot in Virginia Square

Last week, we launched this new column where we solicit your best ideas for empty lots and vacant businesses in Arlington.

It's a modern spin on community planning—Patch's version of a charette, a digital drawing board where all ideas are on the table.

Each week we'll present a new vacant building or an empty lot and ask you to tell us what you think would be the best use for it.

We're calling it Visions for Vacancies.

Forget what zone it's in, ignore setback regulations, dump lot coverage rules and all the other zoning jargon. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community?

Last week, we asked you all what to do with an , and the ideas came pouring in.

One reader suggested a brewery; another wanted a Ross or TJ Maxx. Someone suggested a park with an amphitheater that the community could use for outdoor movies or other community gathering.

This week, we're turning our attention to an empty lot at 3901 N. Fairfax Dr. in Virginia Square.

According to Crimson Partners, which is developing the lot, "3901 North Fairfax is a LEED Gold certified 9-story Class A office building currently under development with over 184,000 SF of space. The building also includes a 13,000 SF performing arts theatre and conference facility, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and an expansive public plaza with rich landscaping and a water feature."

But there's no telling what kinds of businesses will occupy the space. The project won't even be ready until 2014.
