Snow Updates: 90 Percent Chance of Snow in Arlington Friday

Arlington County Schools plan to dismiss on time. From APS:

All APS after-school and evening activities are canceled, including extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, adult and community education classes, and recreation programs in schools and on school grounds. Extended Day will remain open until 6 p.m. but those parents are encouraged to pick up their children earlier if possible.

The National Weather Service is still predicting Friday morning that snow will start in the afternoon and taper off in the evening hours.

The winter weather advisory is in effect from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., the weather service announced.

Arlington Public Schools and Arlington County offices remain open and they have not announced any early closures at this time.

Roads should be snow covered and slippery for the evening commute.

Arlingtonians woke up to a thin blanket of snow and cold weather Thursday only to prepare for another round of the white stuff Friday.

The National Weather Service at Reagan National Airport forecasts a 90 percent chance of snow for Arlington Friday, mostly between 1 and 9 p.m.

For Northern Virginia as a whole, the overall chance of snow is a little less — about 70 percent, and that would fall between 2 and 6 p.m., said Steve Goldstein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sterling.

Goldstein said it won’t be much but will fall through Friday's rush hour.

“We’re looking at another inch or maybe an inch and a half,” Goldstein said.

The region was coated with about an inch of snow Thursday morning. Virginia Department of Transportation salted main roads to help ease the morning commute.

Joan Morris, a spokeswoman for VDOT, said crews will pre-treat main roads Thursday night into Friday to melt some of the ice that may develop overnight. Crews will mobilize again at 4 a.m. Friday, she said.

Between 4 and 11 a.m. Thursday, Arlington County police responded to 34 car crashes — four of which involved some level of injury, according to police. None of the injuries were critical, and no fatalities were reported.

Police remind residents to remain at home unless it is necessary to go out, drive cautiously and allow extra time to reach your destination. Before leaving for your destination, be sure to clear all windows and the vehicle's roof of snow and ice.

Arlington Public Schools started on a two-hour delay on Thursday. Officials are monitoring the weather and will announce any changes or closures Friday on the school system's website.
