Honda CR-V Models Voluntarily Recalled for Fire Risk

American Honda Motor Co. announced on Oct. 6 that 268,000 model-year 2002-2006 Honda CR-Vs are being voluntarily recalled due to a power window master switch issue. 

The car manufacturer said in a press release that "under severe conditions, rain water or other spilled liquids may enter through an open driver’s window and enter the master power window switch on the driver’s door."

"Over time, exposure to water and other fluids can cause electrical resistance in the switch, which ultimately can cause the switch to overheat and melt, damaging the switch and potentially damaging an associated wire harness," Honda officials stated in a release. "Additionally, if a switch melts, it could produce smoke and, potentially cause a fire, creating a risk to motor vehicle safety."

Honda said no crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue, but there have been four switch fires reported. 

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda.

According to Honda, mailed notification will be sent to owners in early November. Owners of these CRVs can determine if their vehicles will need repair by going to www.recalls.honda.com or calling  (800) 999-1009, and selecting option 4.
