A former McLean student was stabbed to death over the weekend. A high school friend has been charged with second-degree murder. Police say they arrived to find the suspect, Rahul Gupta, 24, covered in blood.

Gupta was celebrating his birthday with friends, including the victim, Georgetown law student Mark Edward Waugh, according to multiple reports. At least one person suggested the stabbing was the result of an alcohol-fueled jealous rage, according to the Washington Post.

Now, the Langley High School community is in shock, as well as friends at James Madison University, where Waugh graduated magna cum laude.

"Mark was one of the best people I have ever met," JMU Debate Director Michael Davis told Patch in an email. "He possessed the ability to work extremely hard but never take any setback too seriously. He was kind and I think his number one desire in life was to make other people smile."
