Board Approves Apartment Building Across from Ballston Common Mall

The Crimson on Glebe will replace existing Goodyear building.

The Arlington County Board on Saturday unanimously approved plans to develop a six-story apartment building across the street from Ballston Common Mall. The Crimson on Glebe will replace the existing Goodyear building and an adjacent single-family home at the corner of North Glebe and North Carlin Springs roads. The building, at 650 N. Glebe Road, will be within walking distance to the Ballston Metro Station. The 139,000-square-foot structure will include 163 apartments and 2,200 square feet of ground-level retail space. Like most major projects in the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, the county was able to leverage significant contributions from the developer for its Affordable Housing Investment Fund ($480,000), public art ($75,000) and …

County Approves $5.7M for Columbia Pike Improvements

Project includes burying utility lines between South Wakefield and Four MIle Run Drive.

The Arlington County Board on Saturday unanimously approved a $5.7 million contract to bury utility lines and construct street improvements along a portion of Columbia Pike. The improvements are part of the second phase of the county's Columbia Pike Initiative, according to a news release. The affected portion of the Pike is between South Wakefield Street and Four Mile Run Drive. Once utility lines are underground, Alexandria-based Sagres Construction Corp. will begin building wider sidewalks, new lighting and bus shelters, and planting trees along the street. Board OKs $1.7M for Lyon Village Dog Park Improvements

County has worked with community groups on project for five years.

The Arlington County Board on Saturday unanimously approved spending up to $1.7 million for extensive upgrades to a Lyon Village dog park. Renovation to James Hunter Park, on the corner of North Herndon and 13th streets, should begin this summer. Plans call for a 1,200-square-foot plaza, a solar-powered water feature and irrigation system and a "pet comfort station." "Just steps from the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, this park is going to be a small gem — offering great facilities built using sustainable materials and practices,” Chairwoman Mary Hynes said in a statement. Construction should be complete by late next spring. County staff have worked with various community groups on the project for about five years, according to a news release…

Kaine Talks Rail, Economy and Bipartisanship

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.

U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. "I believe it is a project of federal significance because it links Dulles with the most important capital city in the world," he said. "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. …

Interesting point. Why exactly does NATO still exist? The Soviet Union's Warsaw Pact--NATO's reason for being --disappeared over 20 years ago. And NATO--i.e. the British and their American shills--have initiated several no-win wars in the meantime. Hmm.   more ›

New Law Will Improve Breast Cancer Detection

Recent legislation requires radiologists to notify patients if they have dense breast tissue, which can sometimes hide cancer.

By Leah Small Capital News Service Beginning July 1 women getting mammograms will learn whether they have dense breast tissue that could hide cancer, thanks to recent legislation that addresses the test’s failure to detect certain cancers in women with dense breast tissue. Under the new law, if radiologists conducting mammograms find dense breast tissue, they must send the patient a letter noting that fact—and that dense breast tissue can hide cancer. The letter will urge women to talk to their physicians about the matter. The new “patient inform” law resulted from efforts by a breast cancer survivor, Cathryn Tatusko of Fairfax County, with support from an aptly named national awareness organization called Are You Dense. General Assembly Rejects Gay Judge

Alexandria's Sen. Adam Ebbin called the House of Delegates' debate "homophobic."

The state House of Delegates voted 33-31, with 10 abstentions, to reject Richmond prosecutor Tracy Thorne-Begland's bid to become a General District Court judge, saying his support for gay marriage made him a poor candidate for the bench. Openly gay state Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-30th District), told The Washington Post's Virginia Politics blog: "The debate in the House of Delegates was homophobic and embarrassing and showed a disrespect to a chief deputy commonwealth attorney and decorated veteran who was honorably discharged." Gov. Bob McDonnell said through a spokesman that a judicial nominee's sexual orientation should not be an issue. Del. Bob Marshall (R-13th District), the Family Foundation and others said they did not object to a …

If you're referring to the case which the Supremes heard that was brought against Mr. Cheney's Secret Service detail from 2006, Mr. Cheney was not a party to this suit as the agent(s) were named (http://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/reichle-v-howards/) although it involved an event that he was at. So, from this lawyer's perspective, there is no conflict of interest. If Mr. Cheney were named…   more ›

Independent Candidate for Congress Campaigns on a Shoestring

Arlington resident Jason Howell has less than $10,000 in the campaign bank and needs 1,000 signatures by June 12 to get on the ballot.

Arlington resident Jason Howell isn't letting incumbent Congressman Jim Moran's sizable war chest of nearly half-a-million dollars get in the way of running for Congress. Howell's got less than $10,000 in the bank for his campaign, so he's hitting every local barbecue, 5k and neighborhood meeting he can to help get the word out. Standing outside the Giant grocery store in Arlington's Cherrydale neighborhood over the weekend, Howell said hello to potential voters in what will likely be an uphill battle to try to unseat Moran, a Democrat who some say is gliding toward his 12th term since getting elected in 1990 to represent Virginia's 8th Congressional District. "My wife and I are doing the lion's share of signature-gathering," Howell said…

Of course, Mr Howell is vague. He appears to be a shill for Rep. Moran's campaign. I am amused that Jim thinks this foolishness is necessary to get him re-elected. Obama must be much weaker than reported in northern VA.   more ›
