This column profiles those giving back to those in need in Arlington.
Several Arlington nonprofits will receive grants adding up to about $200,000 on Tuesday.  The sum will be split up among 18 charities in Arlington County and the region. The nonprofits were awarded the funds from the United Way of the National Capital Area. Nearly $1.65 million was raised in the region through the United Way’s annual workplace giving campaign. Employees from more than 800 workplaces at more than 3,000 locations in the region raised money. Arlington County Board Chairman Walter Tejada will be presented a ceremonial check on behalf of the charities during the board's meeting …
A happy hour Thursday at the Wilson Tavern will raise money for the The Children's Tumor Foundation's upcoming Cupid's Undie Run.  “It’s a one and a half mile run and everyone tries to raise money beforehand,” said Kym Jordan, who is running in the race as part of the Lululemon Athletica, Clarendon team. “You run in your underwear and it’s outside. It’s freezing out.” The Cupid's Undie Run on Feb. 9 is a national fundraising event for the foundation that works to find a cure for children with neurofibromatosis. NF is a disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body, causing…
The Washington Capitals, Wizards and Mystics collaborated to spend $25,000 to buy gifts for nearly 100 needy adults and children in their annual Family-to-Family holiday party. Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation, the umbrella charity for the sports teams, organized the holiday party at Arlington’s Kettler Capitals Iceplex earlier this month. The party featured an appearance by team mascots and holiday music. The 21 families who benefitted were given toys, educational materials and clothing, among other gifts, according to a news release. The families were selected after being …
Arlington-based Doorways for Women and Families is seeking donations to help renovate its 11-bed domestic violence safe house. “The safe house is our facility for people who are in immediate danger,” said Heather O’Malley, development director at the organization. “We are pretty much always at full occupancy.”  The nonprofit helps people in the community who are homeless and/or victims of domestic violence. The group runs two shelters, the safe house and a 21-bed facility, O’Malley said. The safe house, which from the outside appears to be a single-family home and is in an undisclosed …
The “Arts+Pints Bazaar” on Columbia Pike will feature local artists, music, and beer for the event supporting the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) this weekend. “It’s just fun, it’s a little bit different, and this year we are hoping it's all that more special because we are hosting it in a different area in South Arlington,” said Genevieve Concannon, an organizer for the event. Twelve local artists will be on hand selling goods for the Saturday event sponsored by the Arlington chapter of Green Drinks and Sweet Root Village. Green Drinks is an international organization that sponsors …
Instead of buying a relative a new shirt or a candle, one event is giving shoppers the chance to buy a prescription for a sick child or a meal for a homeless veteran.   “An alternative gift fair is the gift that gives twice,” said Tara Bibb, a volunteer and organizer for the Gifts that Give Hope event in Arlington. “In this economy, it’s a perfect gift because people want to buy wisely and they want to reduce the focus on consumerism.”   The event hosted at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Arlington is now in its second year locally, Bibb said. Nationally, the Pennsylvania-based Gifts …
