Memorial Day Weekend Gas Prices Up in Northern Virginia

Commuters in NoVa are paying $3.57 per gallon right now—lower than last year, but higher than earlier this spring.

Heading out of town for Memorial Day this weekend? You'll be paying less at the pump than you did last year even though the Northern Virginia area has seen prices spike in recent weeks. Average gas prices for the Northern Virginia region this week are at $3.57 for a gallon of regular unleaded gas, down from $3.69 a gallon a year ago, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. Paying $3.57 a gallon at the pump is better than what many Minnesotans are paying right now—an average of $4.27 a gallon, the highest prices in the country, according to the Star Tribune. Northern Virginia is faring better on gas prices than many other parts of the country, according to AAA. Currently, Virginia’s retail average is 26 cents cheaper than the national average. …

New Owners, Renewed Summer Tradition at AllSpice Cafe

New ownership, new look for longtime Rosslyn staple.

With new management and staff, AllSpice Cafe and Catering in Rosslyn is shaking up the menu and decor and re-starting a summer tradition. The former owner is retiring, and the restaurant has undergone a renovation from new paint to reorganization. Rich Vizard, a co-owner and manager, said they plan to install a new salad bar in the near future, and reorganize the cashier, sandwich and beverage areas to improve the flow of the café for customers. May is National Hamburger Month. Arlington has several new choices to go out for a burger—but the best burger in Arlington is up for debate.

Any hamburger connoisseurs out there? May is National Hamburger Month in Arlington and across the country, and where the best burger in Arlington is depends on which carnivore you ask. According to Eater.com, Ray's burgers gets a lot of nods whether you go to Ray's to the Third or venture elsewhere.  According to one Yelp reviewer, Philadelphia Mike's of Rosslyn has surprisingly good burgers. Z Burger opened earlier this year near Virginia Square. Kite Runner Cafe Opening Saturday

Restaurant offers Afghan, Indian, Lebanese fusion food.

After months of hard work and planning, the owners of the Kite Runner Cafe will celebrate their grand opening Saturday. "It took us awhile to get everything done. We built out the layout of the restaurant from scratch," said co-owner Marzia Spanta.  The new restaurant, located at 3800 Lee Highway in Arlington, will offer a fusion style menu featuring Afghan, Indian and Lebanese food.  Homayon Karimy set out to fulfill his dream of owning a restaurant with his wife Marzia Spanta and his brother Timor Karimy. Homayon will serve as chef at the restaurant after previously working for years as chef at Lebanese Taverna. Delaware beach goers may remember visiting one of Oby Lee's five coffee shops, known for homemade freshly roasted coffee beans and winner of "Best in State" coffee awards for eight years running.  Now their famous coffee can be purchased right here in Clarendon.   Ready for a life change, Oby Lee closed all of the shops in Delaware and moved with his girlfriend Ula Piotrowska to Arlington where they opened a completely new restaurant called Oby Lee Creperie and Winery. FroZenYo Coming to Rosslyn

The chain of self-serve frozen yogurt shops is adding a new Arlington location.

FroZenYo is opening a new location in Rosslyn at 1735 N. Lynn St. soon. The Rosslyn shop will be the fourth location in Northern Virginia. FroZenYo is a chain of self-serve frozen yogurt shops founded in Washington, D.C. The first store was opened in Friendship Heights in 2009. The frozen yogurt shop will take over the space formerly occupied by convenience store News & Necessities. GU Considers Renting Graduate Student Housing in Rosslyn

Georgetown University does not currently provide housing for graduate students.

A new building under construction in Rosslyn could help Georgetown University meet demand for housing among graduate students, according to The Washington Business Journal. One building under consideration for additional housing is The JBG Co's. Slate building, a 203-unit residential structure at 1524 Clarendon Blvd. in Arlington, according to the Business Journal. The Slate building is part of a large residential and retail development, approved in 2008, to include 400 market-rate and 54 affordable apartment units along with 25 townhouses and as much as 10,000 square feet of retail, according to the Rosslyn Business Improvement District website.
