Maywood Accident Sparks Calls for Four-Way Stop Signs

A two-car accident in the Maywood neighborhood near a school bus stop Thursday morning is causing many residents to appeal to Arlington County for a four-way stop sign at 21st Avenue and Monroe Street.
Just before school buses arrived for four local schools at the intersection, the collision sent one car through a neighbor's fence and into a tree. There were no injuries.
Said resident Leah Maderal, "It feels like I am watching a fatal accident in very slow motion, just waiting to see a child struck by a car one day."
She adds: "The intersection is not parallel and you have to pull well into the intersection to see. New construction of condominiums nearby will bring even more cars through."
On the Maywood listserv, many residents were emailing county officials for a change at the intersection from a two-way stop sign on 21st Avenue to four-way stops. They have made similar requests in the past but say they were told that the county has a policy against four-way stops. Some also asked the school superintendent to move the bus stops.

Thank you for covering this. This is a particularly dangerous intersection, since people use it as a cut-through between Lee Hwy and Lorcom Lane. The sight lines on two sides are blocked by parked cars and the uneven terrain. The county has said at a hearing about this several years ago it might take a fatality to deserve a 4-way stop. Let's hope not.

This is a great example of how people (or neighborhoods, for that matter) can use our Local Voices platform. I'd love to see regular contributions from Maywood, from Columbia Pike, from Aurora Highlands and from all of Arlington's vibrant neighborhoods! I'm working on some housekeeping items for the site(s) right now... once all of that is taken care of, I hope to actively recruit some bloggers from the various neighborhoods :)
