The Arlington County Police Department is looking for two men who attempted to hold up a 24-hour convenience store but ended up scaring themselves away before anything was stolen.

At about 3:25 a.m. Sunday, two men entered the 7-Eleven near the intersection of George Mason Drive and Columbia Pike, according to information police have released.

One of the men pulled a gun on the clerk, the only employee in the store at the time, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.

The second man entered the store and a firecracker exploded in his hand, scaring both men, according to police. They ran away.

Investigators aren't sure whether the second man lit the firecracker inside the store or just before entering.

"We don't know if they were planning to use that in some capacity in the store, or why they came into the store with that object, or what their intentions were," Sternbeck said. "The cashier said he heard an explosion and it scared both the subjects away."

Police aren't sure what type of firecracker was used.

No customers were in the store, and the clerk was not injured. Nothing was taken.

Investigators are reviewing security camera footage in hopes of identifying the two would-be armed robbers, Sternbeck said.

The man with the gun was described as approximately 5 feet, 8 inches tall with a medium build and black hair. He was wearing black shorts and a grey hooded sweatshirt with a dark bandana around his face at the time of the attempted robbery.

The second man has been described as about 5 feet, 7 inches tall with a average build. He was wearing a white V-neck T-shirt and dark shorts at the time of the incident.
