'Thank You For Giving Me Wings'

Dozens of memorials line the Apple Store in Clarendon marking the passing of tech giant Steve Jobs.

By Thursday afternoon, a number of hand-written memorials, flowers and apples made one storefront in the Market Common Clarendon a bit brighter despite an air of sadness.

From simple to personal, the memorials posted on the marked the passing of the company’s co-founder, Steve Jobs. Jobs died Wednesday at 56 after a long battle with cancer.

“Steve, your products gave me a new life. I am dyslexic, and Apple understands creativity (and) how to unleash potential. Thank you for giving me wings,” one memorial stated.

Occasionally, a passerby would pick up a pen and write his or her own message on one of the various colored Post-it notes atop a stool outside the store’s doorway.

Some, like Matt Dwyer of Alexandria, brought an apple from the Whole Foods across the street.

“They’re expected,” Dwyer, a graphic designer, said of the memorials.

“(Jobs) pretty much influenced what we’re all doing with electronics these days. I know I wouldn’t be where I am without their products,” he said.

“…He’s probably had more impact on people’s lives than they realize – or want to admit.”

Others would simply stop and read the wall, perhaps snap a picture or show their children the colorful tribute.

A few bouquets of flowers were on the ground immediately outside the store. It was just a small example of the outpouring of love Jobs received around the world Thursday.

“You’re not going to see a CEO who dies receive this kind of homage anytime soon,” said Ricardo Guilherme of Switzerland, who was in town visiting family.

“He stuck to his views, his principles. He didn’t just bow to the market. That’s what made people respect him so much.”

He added: “Because of him, using a computer is not boring anymore.”
