Speak Out: Was Canceling School Monday the Right Call?
Public schools in Arlington are closed today. The winter weather advisory ends at 10 a.m.
Some Arlington residents woke up to ice-covered windshields on their cars and wet roads this morning.
A winter weather advisory was in effect from 5 - 10 a.m. Monday, with warnings about ice, sleet and freezing rain. Temperatures are expected to rise to 40 degrees later today, according to local forecasters.
Early Monday, Arlington Public Schools officials announced schools would remain closed all day. According to a message on the school system's website:
All Arlington Public Schools will be closed today. Offices will be open and a liberal leave policy is in effect. Extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, adult and community education classes, and recreation programs in schools and on school grounds are canceled.
For information about Arlington County services, pools and other information, see the Arlington County government website.
In addition, federal employees may stay home until noon or take unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework, according to the Office of Personnel Management.
Did Arlington officials make the right call in canceling school today, or would a delay have been sufficient? Tell us in the comments!

I use the time-tested Miata test. If I can drive my 1996 Miata into work, then schools should be open where I live. Maybe I'll submit that in the comments section.

Silly decision. We are calling this a rain day in our house.

It was very slippery when I drove this AM, so a delay made sense. But canceling school made no sense, they should have followed the lead of the federal government and other area schools systems of opening at 10:00 AM.

Too cautious, unless something occurred at one of the schools in the early morning that we do not know about.
