Police: Man Beats Random Bus Passenger

Arlington man charged with malicious wounding.

A 21-year-old man beat a random Metrobus passenger on Memorial Day as he was trying to exit the vehicle, according to the Arlington County Police Department.

Tevin Brown-Phillips, of Arlington, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding.

Brown-Phillips was standing near the rear bus door, blocking the exit, when another passenger attempted to get off in the 2500 block of Columbia Pike at about 3:47 p.m. Monday, according to police.

"The victim taps the suspect on the shoulder and asks him to move," police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. "The suspect turns and starts throwing haymakers."

The victim, who was not identified by police, was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries. Brown-Phillips fled the scene on foot but was located shortly afterward, Sternbeck said.

The two didn't know each other, he said. Drugs and alcohol were not involved.
