Police Investigate Murder-Suicide in Fairlington
Spokesman: Family member found couple dead in their apartment Tuesday afternoon.
Arlington County police are investigating what they believe to be a murder-suicide in the Fairlington neighborhood.
A woman came home Tuesday afternoon to her apartment in the 4500 block of 31st Street South to find a man and woman dead in a bedroom, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.
The family member, who lived there with the couple, called 911 at 2:43 p.m.
Both victims are 30 years old.
Police believe the man killed the woman and then himself, Sternbeck said. It appears a different weapon was used in each death, though Sternbeck would not say what those weapons were.
"That's part of our ongoing investigation," he said. "Details will be released upon notification of next of kin and a thorough examination by the medical examiner's office."
The couple was involved in an intimate relationship, but it is so far unclear if they were married.
Sternbeck would not say whether police had a history of emergency calls from the apartment where the couple was found.
Investigators have not found any note, handwritten or digital communication to shed light on what happened. There's no evidence drugs or alcohol were involved, Sternbeck said.
Police are in the initial stages of their investigation.
The last homicide in Arlington County occurred in March 2010.
Update: An 8:06 p.m. news release identified the incident location as the Park Shirlington Apartments.
