Police Help Save Man's Life Following Late-Night Fight

Spokesman: Man suffered arterial cut during altercation.

Arlington County police helped save the life of a man who suffered an arterial cut during a fight this week.

Seven men who were drinking together Sunday night were outside in the 1200 block of South Scott Street at about 1 a.m. Monday when a fight erupted.

During the fight, one of the men — Onon Turmandakh, 27, of Arlington — took a broken beer bottle and cut one of the other men on his bicep, slicing an artery in the process, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.

That man suffered a "significant" amount of blood loss, along with puncture wounds to the groin, leg and throat, Sternbeck said.

Police arrived at 1:09 a.m., separated everyone and immediately began medical care on the man with the severe cut—using a tourniquet, a clotting agent and direct pressure, Sternbeck said.

"They assisted in saving this guy's life. That's how much blood this guy was losing," he said.

EMS arrived and took the man to George Washington University Hospital. As of late Monday afternoon, he remained there.

Another man suffered cuts to the extent that he needed stitches over one eye and staples for a gash in his head.

Sternbeck did not know what the fight was about. Detectives had not yet completed their report, and the investigation remains open.

Turmandakh was arrested and charged with assault by mob and malicious wounding.

Two other men, whose identities weren't immediately available, also were charged with assault by mob, Sternbeck said.

Trying to figure out how they got an "assault by mob" from this fact pattern. They charge that for everything.
