The campaign of J. Patrick Murray, the sole Republican candidate running against Congressman Jim Moran (D-8th District), is running low on funds, according to the latest campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.

An FEC disclosure form states that Murray has:

• $38,000 in debts (candidate notes this is a loan to himself)
• $33,815.87 in contributions from January to March 31
• $28,495.85 cash on hand
• $105,261.43 in net contributions

"What you see is long-term debt that is money I loaned to the campaign," Murray told Patch on Monday. "That's my money, largely from the first time I ran. We don't owe anybody anything. We have cash on hand and continue to do more."

Murray ran against Moran, an 11-term incumbent, in 2010, taking 37.31 percent of the vote.

Murray said his campaign is "working hard to raise more" funds and plans to hold a fundraiser for his campaign on May 22 with Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who recently announced he is running for governor.

Murray, an Alexandria resident, said he is also planning a fundraiser with former Gov. George Allen, who is running for his old Senate seat, but no date has been set.

Moran raised $122,031.00 from January to March 31, FEC records show. His cash-on-hand is $412,556.58 with no debts.

Democratic primary challenger Bruce Shuttleworth of Arlington has raised $31,544, with cash on hand of $34,285.33, FEC records show. Total debts according to the FEC: $45,000.

The FEC did not have any campaign contribution records for Independent candidate Jason Howell of Arlington other than a filing to run for office.
