A group from St. George's Episcopal Church in Arlington brought Ash Wednesday to busy commuters outside the Virginia Square Metro Station.
About 20 of the faithful received the ashes during the church's morning shift, with a slower crowd in the evening due to rain.
This is the second year the church has put on the event. Volunteers also distribute ashes outside the Clarendon Metro Station.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent.
