Arlington Board Approves 10-Cent Per Mile Taxi Fare Increase

Board also exempts young riders from extra passenger charge.

The Arlington County Board on Saturday voted unanimously to increase the rate taxis charge per mile by 10 cents.

The mileage rate will increase from $2 to $2.10 on Jan. 1, according to a county news release.

The board also restricted cabs from imposing an extra passenger charge on anyone 12 or younger.

The move was designed to help cover increased operating expenses taxi drivers have faced since July 2008, the last time the board approved an hike, the release states.

This story has be updated to reflect the unanimous vote on this agenda item. Arlington County issued a press release Saturday afternoon indicating a 3-2 vote on this matter. Calls to the county spokeswoman listed as the media contact on that original release have not been returned. Sunday morning, the county issued a press release correcting the vote tally.
