Alexandria Dentist Sentenced for Insurance Fraud
Tuan Vu of Cosmetic and Family Dentistry will spend 46 months in prison and pay substantial fines.
Tuan Vu, 43, of Arlington, on Tuesday was sentenced to 46 months in prison and fines for committing health care fraud at his Alexandria dental practice.
Vu also will have two years of supervised release following his prison term for defrauding more than 50 private dental insurance providers of more than $2 million.
U.S. District Judge Liam O’Grady also ordered Vu to pay a $250,000 fine and more than $2 million in restitution.
Vu, the owner of Cosmetic & Family Dentistry in Alexandria, pleaded guilty to health care fraud in January.
According to court documents, Vu admitted to committing health care fraud from at least January 2007 to September 2011.
During the time of his scheme, Vu billed dental insurance providers for services that he did not provide his patients. As a result of Vu’s actions, more than 50 private insurance providers suffered more than $2 million in actual losses.
Vu’s conduct also resulted in a substantial loss to the federal government and Virginia, including more than $300,000 to the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program and the Virginia Medicaid program, according to the FBI.
The FBI’s Washington Field Office investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chad Golder prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
